- The Work as a Representation -

Thomas Mann is depicted here at the age of about 55, with his characteristic nose, pronounced nasolabial folds, slightly sunken eyes with slightly protruding bags under the eyes, a high forehead that is slightly indented in the center, and a striking chin. The entire face is masterfully sculpted, capturing each individual feature. The portrait appears extremely lifelike, yet lends the Nobel laureate a monumental character enhanced by a patina reminiscent of black bronze. The slightly melancholic eyes and furrowed brows give the impression that he is beholding his own work as an inner vision. This portrait, depicting the writer prior to his emigration to the United States, is a particularly expressive representation of the German poet who is arguably the most famous after Goethe.
