After the first defeat of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) in Kollin, Bohemia, inflicted on the Prussians by the Austrian field marshal Leopold Joseph von Daun, Frederick the Great sits on a bench and reflects on the situation in view of the dead and wounded, symbolized by the soldier opposite him. The bench on which the king sits is also a fountain, representing the king's constantly flowing intellectual power, as he draws new plans in the sand with his cane.
