- The Cosmos of Literature -
Clothed in a closed coat and with his arms crossed behind his back, Goethe rises column-like into the height, which lends him a classical character, further enhanced by the standing and supporting leg motif. With the coat unbuttoned at the top, the closed form opens up, creating a bust-like effect that presents the head in a distinctive way and repeatedly draws the gaze to Goethe’s face. Precisely because the coat forms a large, smooth surface, the physiognomy of the face—elaborated down to the finest detail—stands out particularly well. With wide-open eyes and a high, thoughtful brow, Goethe gazes into the richness of a literary cosmos.
