- Expressive Mourning -

While the First World War was sometimes greeted with jubilation in Expressionist circles, Smith created a contemplative image that expresses the grief over the loss of loved ones in the first year of the war. He himself used an expressionist imagery. The black figures seem to be torn open by the bright scar-like openings, while the light and shadow effects of the background intensify the grief of each group.
